To some critics' dismay, the inclusion of Tyrone Mings in the Euro 2021 squad saw England fans questioning Gareth Southgate's squad selection ahead of the tournament. And the new English international hasn't set a foot wrong in the tournament so far.

Tyler Mings's 2020/21 season stats |
The 20/21 season has seen the Center-back top the charts, competing with names by the likes of John Stones, Harry Maguire, and Ruben Dias in the Premier League in what was only his second season in the top flight for Aston Villa.
Paired with the brilliant defending partner, Ezri Konsa on the back of Aston Villa, the duo claimed 12 clean sheets and saw Aston Villa shoot to near the top-half finish the league in their second season after promotion from the Championship.
The quick-paced defender was hard to get past even by the paciest attackers this season as Mings was only dribbled past 0.2 times per game in the 20/21 campaign, less than all the center backs in the Euro squad, which ranks him 3rd in the list of center-backs who played more than 30 games this season in the league. Mings also made the second most clearances(170) only topped by Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo.
The center-back impressed with his overall defensive game as he conceded only 42 goals in 36 matches. Not bad for a team that just got promoted to the league. Mings is also comfortable with the ball in his feet prior to his previous experience of playing as a left-back for Ipswich and Bournemouth. He is quick off the mark, meaning Aston Villa has very little to worry about playing a high defensive line. Mings has an impressive interception average of 1.2 per 90 minutes, 6th best among the center backs of the league.
Passing an injury-free season, Tyrone Mings made the most out of his 36 league appearances this season along with one EFL cup appearance.
Following the injury of their captain Jack Grealish in the mid-season, Mings was handed the captain's armband as he led the team for 12 matches in which, the team faced 6 losses and only managed to come out with 3 wins. He also saw his mistake against Fulham leading to an Alexander Mitrovic goal in Aston Villa's 3-1 win. The following week, Tyrone Mings's another mistake in defense against Liverpool saw Mohamed Salah almost scoring a goal past Martinez. Tyron Mings has the 2nd most mistakes leading to opponent shots this season with 5 such occurrences besides his name, indicating his lack of concentration at times.
The addition of Tyrone Mings brings pace and aggression in the defensive department of the English squad, as the defender is the quickest out of the 4 chosen center backs in the team, helping the team to push their defensive line a bit higher. Mings was one of the key players in England's first match against Croatia in the Euro 2021. The center back closed down the Croatians from taking many long shot opportunities. While also making an opportunity for Raheem Sterling from an indirect free-kick by heading back the ball to him which was shot high off the post by Sterling. It was a match where the back line of England did nothing wrong for the entire 90 minutes.
So far, Mings has done enough to justify his place in the England squad. The rest is up to him to make the most of the campaign if he wants to solidify his position in the team and prove the pundits wrong.
