Why Swansea Are Eyeing For Burnley's Jimmy Dunne on a Free Transfer Move?

The Defender was linked in a move to Preston North End around June prior to his contract expiration. Fast forward to July, more clubs including Swansea have joined in the battle to fish out the Claret center back now that the player is out of contract.

Swansea City and Burnley extend their disagreement over the compensation fee for the transfer of Jimmy Dunne.

The Swans are determined to strengthen their defense having seen Marc Guehl return to parent club Chelsea following the conclusion of the 2020/21 campaign.

However, he is expected to depart Turf Moor for nothing, although any club looking to sign Dunne would be required to pay Sean Dyche's side a compensation fee given that the center-back is only 23 years of age.

Swansea would hope to stump up a figure of around £500,000 although it's understood Burnley would want a low seven-figure sum.

Nevertheless, the Swans remain keen to reach an agreement with the Lancashire outfit in a bid to add the Irishman to their ranks ahead of the new campaign.

Following the interest in the No-Nonsense Center Back from two Championship clubs, we take a look at what Jimmy Dunne can offer in the back-line of Championship sides.

Jimmy Dunne is officially a free agent after his contract expired with Burnley. The 23 year old center back in the looks for a new club and Swansea is leading the race to sign the player.

Jimmy Dunne is an out-and-out center back capable of playing in both left and right positions. The defender is an aerial threat in indirect free-kicks and tends to clear the ball from his own box more often than not.

Dunne has made 3 Premier League appearances last season, playing as the fourth choice center-back behind James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, and Kevin Long.

In those three matches, the defender conceded 6 goals and won none of the matches.

Although disappointing for the player, signs were found that the young Irishmen have what it takes to compete in the top league given he gets more match experience with playing alongside top players.

The defender played very well against Leicester in the league to keep Jamie Vardy at the bay even though the team failed to secure any points from the match as Burnley lost that match 4-2 following a series of unfortunate goals.

In those three appearances by the defender, he managed to secure a tackle ratio of 1.0 with a perfect tackle success rate of 100%. Dunne was also good with his interception as the defender made 2 interceptions per game.

The Irishmen won 30 duels with a success rate of 73%. He was also pretty impressive in aerial duels, winning 23 aerial battles in those 3 matches.

He also managed to score a headed goal against Leicester in his very first Premier League match.

Jimmy Dunne is yet to improve in his ball-playing game if the center-back wants to establish himself as a Premier League defender in the future. But for now, he will likely want to improve his game and gain regular match experience in the second division of English football for the time.

The defender's immense physicality makes him a perfect suitor for most of the Championship side. He is not shy to make aggressive challenges and can position himself well in the defensive line. He can mark his opponents tightly enough but may suffer to keep up with pacy forwards at times given his average sprinting and acceleration.

Dunne managed to find his teammates successfully on 10 occasions with his long balls in his three matches in the Premier League. Something the defender will look to master in his game.

Only 23 years of age, the center back has a long way to go ahead of him to improve upon his shortcomings shown earlier in his game.

The summer transfer window closes at 11pm on Tuesday, August 31.
