Towns had to fight for the defender with many Championship clubs, with Derby keen on resigning their former loanee and Peterborough among those previously showing interest.

Talks are going on about the need for another center back in the back for the Tractor Boys with the possibility of signing Everton's Lewis Gibson hovering above the club in the summer transfer market.

Connor Chaplin was one of Barnsley's key members in the past couple of years, featuring 86 times for Barnsley during his two-season in South Yorkshire. The forward has 15 goals in the Championship and has a lot to prove in the future.

It is understood that the deal can be in the region of £750,000.

Chaplin is reunited with Ipswich boss Paul Cook for whom he played at Portsmouth, on a three-year deal. He is the second signing of the day for Ipswich who secured double signing.
