It might come as a shock to some fans but former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan sees the future in the youth as he went on to make bold claims about two of the top prodigies of the club.
Yet to make his breakthrough appearance in the senior team, Gelhardt impressed the former Leeds marksman with 11 goals in 16 appearances in Premier League 2 last season.
The young forward featured on the bench for eight Premier League matches last season and there is a chance that he will force his way out in the starting XI. And lack of interest from Leeds to replace Rodrigo in the summer can mean that the English forward can look on to feature in a good number of matches in the coming days.
Although not ready for regular first-team football, a good amount of rotation and game time will be beneficial for the Englishman to get a good grip of English top flight.
Gelhardt has proved himself at the academy level. He has performed more than well in the under 23s. Noel Whelan believes that it is about time the striker starts knocking alarm bells in the starting XI.
''I want to see him play. I want to see him go express himself like he did with the under-23s.'' - said the former Leeds forward exclusively to Football Insider.
''That creativity in that number 10 role but also that sharpness in his finishing.''
On the other hand, Leeds revealed via Twitter that Jamie Shackleton came out on top in the beep test on the first day of pre-season training.
Shackleton has been a squad player for Marcelo Bielsa during the 2020/21 campaign. He is fast, versatile, and good with the ball. The midfielder is the perfect Bielsa player as his diligence and work ethic competes with some of the top players in the league.
''Sometimes you can see some shock people starting the season just off the back of pre-season games and the way they trained. That could happen with Shackleton.''
The midfielder managed 3 starts in the previous season and will look forward to stepping up his game to secure a permanent place in the starting XI.
